Part of my struggle with getting this year’s auction started was not having any sense of how to anchor the goal or starting bids. When we did this last year, the need was nearly endless and the proceeds directly supported our caregiving support.
José was clear in his wishes, but it’s been up to me to determine how to see them through.
After a slow start due to foot-draggging and indecision on my part, we are picking up momentum and I’ve just added an overall goal to strive for by Tuesday, when the auction ends at 2PM Hawaii / 5PM Pacific / 8PM Eastern.
The primary beneficiary is Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s FAJARDO INTERNSHIP FUND. This year, the fund enabled HPR to bring on Emma Caires, a summer intern who was recently hired as a news producer. José would be thrilled.
Given the solid seeding of the fund prior to his passing, our goal in this first year is modest, $5,000 to HPR and $500 to our new Team José nonprofit. As of Saturday afternoon, we are just shy of 40% towards reaching that goal.
